St Luke attended by Sts Cecelia, Barrahane and Fidelis (A)
St. Barrahane’s Church of Ireland, Castletownsend, Co. Cork (MAP) Number of Windows in Castletownsend: 3 : Number of Lights in this Window: 3 Date 1926
This small exquisite window is situated on the south wall of the chancel. It is in memory of Sir Egerton Coghill, Bart., of Glenbarrahane. It was completed by Harry Clarke in 1926. The theme of Saint Luke, patron saint of painters, was chosen since Sir Coghill was a painter.
St. Luke wears garments of deep blues, purples, red, green and magenta. The saint holds a brush and a palette, containing a portrait of the Virgin Mary. A miniature of Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of music, is shown playing an organ at St. Luke’s right shoulder. Other saints depicted are St. John, St. Fidelis (the name-day saint of Sir Egerton) and St. Barrahane holding a Church (Castlehaven parish).
The family’s coat of arms is on the left lower panel. The window is signed in the lower border: Harry Clarke.
