The Ascension (B)

Roundfort Catholic Church, Hollymount, Co. Mayo : 1926

The Ascension Full WindowThe commission for the seven-light window for Roundfort, near Hollymount, was gained at the suggestion of the architect, R. M Butler. The Ascension window was assembled in the summer of 1926 and installed in the catholic church at Roundfort later that year (Bowe: 1994). The window depicts Christ ascending into heaven, surrounded by Mary, his disciples and most devout followers. The first three and last three top panels depict angels, attending to Christ on his journey to heaven. The lower panels portray saints praying as Christ ascends into heaven. The central light depicts Christ wearing a golden shawl and robes of scarlet and ivory with purple sashes. A burgundy cloak is placed around his shoulders by the angels in attendance. Below, his mother, Mary, kneels in prayer. Mary is attired in a deep blue cloak with emerald trimming, white robes and a purple and magenta sash.
