National Museum of Ireland, A Meeting

A Meeting (1918 Panel)

National Museum, Collins Barracks, Dublin 1. Window: 2, Number of Lights 1,  Date 1918

The exquisite panel, A Meeting, was commissioned by Miss Jane French, a friend of Larky Waldron, in July 1918 (Bowe: 1994, p. 80). It was inspired by a ballad written by Heinrich Heine.

The beautiful mermaid is depicted beside a merman, her glittering golden hair cascading in swirling spirals around her shoulders. The merman is attired in a white garment decorated with blue ferns. His arm is linking the mermaid's while he gazes at her delicate pale features. The panel is signed Harry Clarke 1918.
