The Honan Chapel
The Honan Chapel of St. Finbarr, University College Cork, Western Road, Cork City. Number of Lights 3, Window: 9 Date 1915
Between 1915 and 1918 Harry Clarke created nine windows for the Honan Chapel of St. Finbarr, at University College Cork.
These magnificent windows were central in building a solid reputation for Harry’s skilled craftsmanship and originality. The windows are: Saints Brigid, Patrick and Colmcille 1915 (3 lights); St. Finbarr (1916), St. Ita (1916), St. Albert (1916), St. Gobnait (1916), St. Brendan (1916), St. Declan (1916), St. Joseph (1917), and Our Lady of Sorrows (1917).
Several of the windows went on view in the Studios in June 1916 to rave reviews. The Irish Times (30th June 1916) reported that: the windows, in the opinion of some of the most competent critics, rival in beauty some of most remarkable products of Continental art.
